(Not so) Golden Week

It’s been two weeks since my last post. I really should have been able to write at least one maybe two posts in the interval since, but I didn’t. I don’t remember what happened in the last week of school, except that I had my first day at the other elementary school. The fifth grade teacher was great, but the other teachers not so much. They were like some of the teachers in Kikyo—in the class, maybe directing, but not engaged.

I wanted to go plant rice in Niigata for two or three days during golden week, but my reservation wasn’t accepted so I didn’t go. My pastor invited me to join some families for a day camp/barbecue, but I got a bad headache on Monday and Tuesday and ended up not going. In fact I couldn’t concentrate on doing much of anything during those days, so I watched a movie in English. Even that I had a hard time concentrating on, but that could have been partially because of the movie. It was “Rise of the Guardians”, which is a popular world for fanfiction. The movie had some potential, and wasn’t cringe-inducing like a lot of movies, but it was too focused on inhumanity and thus seemed irrational.

I felt better on Wednesday and went climbing. I cooked several good meals, but in the end I don’t think they’re worth trying again. I wrote maybe 500 words of a Harry Potter fanfiction while slightly intoxicated, and while I think it was well-written syntactically and interesting dramatically, the plot didn’t make much sense. On Friday I went climbing and on my last climb, I strained a finger joint. The finger really hurt, and it became swollen. Even now it hurts a bit and is definitely swollen, so I think I’m going to cancel my rock climbing trip for this weekend.

Also on Friday I did a bunch of cleaning and went shopping and tried to finish making my apartment hospitable. I finished my closet, but the kitchen still needs a bit of work. I did buy a nice spice rack though, which makes my countertop look a little nicer. That night after climbing I went to the bar with Abe-sensei. I talked for a long time with some funny guy whose English was not very good but he was fearless in using it. He kept saying “I am tired and she (his wife) is angry.” And he would say things like “Do you know (famous person)? He is my (father/mother/daughter).” It was funny.

So in the end my golden week disappeared mostly into time unknown. I did spend a lot of time on the kittens game, which I restarted, and about 25 hours on Factorio because a new version of the game came out. I also tried to play Knights of the Old Republic, but I ended up spending a lot of time trying to plan a character so I kind of got frustrated and only played a couple of hours. That doesn’t seem like it accounts for the hours that disappeared, but it’s all I have.

Escapism

I'm tired of doing things that have no significance. I'm tired of the escapism that sits at my doorstep and bounds inside at the sli...
